The pandemic stopped international travel for some time. When it resumed, it wasn’t the same. Many airlines – including the popular budget airline Norwegian, which had revolutionised air travel between Scandinavia and the rest of the world – scrapped routes and stopped serving many regional airports in the UK.
So what are the best ways to get to and from Norway?
Air
Current routes include:

By train
“There’s no need to fly. It’s easy to travel from London to Norway by train, taking an evening Eurostar to Brussels, going from Brussels to Copenhagen by train next day, then from Copenhagen to Oslo the day after that. Or take Eurostar to Amsterdam, stay overnight, then use the comfortable overnight ferry from Eemshaven in the north of the Netherlands to Norway. Or take a train from London to Kiel in Germany then the luxurious Color Line ferry to Oslo, sailing up Oslo Fjord over breakfast.”
International rail travel expert “The Man in Seat 61” explains the options on his site at www.seat61.com
TAKING A CAR

Many will have memories of the sea crossing operated by Fred Olsen Bergen Line, Color Line and DFDS between the UK – typically Newcastle – and Bergen, Stavanger or Kristiansand. Sadly that route stopped operating in 2008. However, it is possible to take your car to Norway if you transit via continental Europe.
ferrygogo.com proposes the following options:
- NEW ROUTE: Emden (Germany)/Eemshaven (Netherlands) – Kristiansand (Norway), Holland Norway Lines, 18 hours, 3 times weekly
- Kiel (Germany) – Oslo (Norway), Color Line, 20 hours, departures daily
- Hirtshals (Denmark) – Larvik/Kristiansand (Norway), Color Line
- Copenhagen/Frederikshavn (Denmark) – Oslo (Norway) – DFDS
- Hirtshals (Denmark) – Stavanger/Bergen (Norway) – Fjordline
- There is also a freight route, for which we don’t have current details: Hull Immingham (UK) – Moss (Norway) – Halden (Norway) – Ghent (Belgium)
